DV FAQs
Our Dedicated Virtual servers feature dedicated RAM, guaranteed bandwidth, and resource isolation—just like you'd get with a traditional Dedicated server. What you DON'T get with a DV server is the extra large price tag. With DV you'll get the power, control, and flexibility you need without putting a dent in your pocketbook. Explore our most popular FAQs to learn more about our revolutionary Dedicated Virtual hosting.
What is a Dedicated Virtual server (or VPS)?
With a Dedicated Virtual server (otherwise known as a Virtual Private Server or VPS), physical servers are segmented into "virtual" environments. Each virtual server acts just like a dedicated server—offering root access control, dedicated bandwidth and RAM, remote desktop management, a traditional operating system interface, and the ability to host and manage multiple domains. The benefit of a virtual server is that it does all this at a fraction of the cost of a traditional dedicated server. At Hostlane, you also get your choice of a Linux or Windows Dedicated Virtual server.
What are the benefits of using a DV server?
They are numerous, but here are some of the highlights:
- Total control over your server
- Dedicated RAM and Bandwidth
- Remote Desktop Management (on Windows DV), and SSH Access (on Linux DV)
- Isolated resources
- Host multiple domains
- Become your own hosting reseller
Can I test out a DV server without making a commitment?
Absolutely. We want you to be sure a DV server is the right hosting solution for you. That's why we offer a 30-Day Money Back Guarantee. If you discontinue your DV hosting within 30 days of the original purchase date, you'll receive a full refund of the purchase price (minus overage charges and credit card chargebacks). This 30-day money back guarantee does not apply to any other products or services and does not apply to account renewals. Also, if your account is terminated or canceled for violations of the VPS/DV Agreement, you will not qualify for the 30-day money back guarantee.
How is DV hosting different from shared hosting?
Unlike shared hosting, with DV you can completely customize your hosting experience to fit your preferences. Shared accounts lack the customizable benefits inherent with DV hosting, as shared accounts prohibit administrative access to the server the account is hosted on. Conversely, with DV you can manage disk space, bandwidth, and RAM usage, as well as allocate all other server resources. With Dedicated Virtual, your experience is completely flexible.
What is the Difference between DV and a Dedicated Server?
Surprisingly the differences are fairly limited, but the differences that do exist are significant.
- Disk space allotments
- Price
With a traditional Dedicated Server, you get a large disk space allotment, total control over your server and its resources, and the ability to host multiple domains. Resources such as disk space, bandwidth, and RAM are completely isolated to the physical server you are using to host your websites.
With a Dedicated Virtual server you get the same complete server and resource control, the ability to host multiple domains, plus dedicated disk space, RAM, and bandwidth. The primary difference between the two is the volume of disk space allotted to your hosting account (it is typically smaller with a Dedicated Virtual server), and the price tag.
With a dedicated server, you pay for the luxury of greater disk space allotments and an isolated physical server. But if you don't need the extra space, why should you pay more?
Who should use DV?
A DV server is a great solution for both businesses and individuals. If your site is constantly growing, and you see decreased performance due to increases in web traffic, it may be time to upgrade to a DV server. Perhaps you haven't experienced any of this, but you just want the flexibility and control that accompanies a DV server. Or maybe you'd like to start a business reselling hosting to other individuals and businesses. If you or your business relate to any of these scenarios, a DV server is right for you.
What are Plesk and cPanel/WHM?
Both Plesk and cPanel/WHM are industry-leading control panels. They both serve as an interface for managing your domains and controlling your server. At Hostlane, we offer Parallel's Plesk on both our Windows DV and Linux DV servers. cPanel/WHM is exclusive to Linux DV accounts.
Can I resell hosting on my DV server?
The ability to host multiple domains and resell hosting is one of the primary reasons people purchase a DV server. Both the Plesk and cPanel/WHM control panels allow you to skin the control panel to reflect your brand. They also both let you segment control panel access by the type of account. While you serve as administrator over your entire server, you can limit customers' access only to the resources specific to their domain. You can also resell hosting to other resellers, and create accounts that allow them to manage other customer's hosting accounts. Whether you're new to reselling or you've been at it for a while, a DV server is a great and cost-effective way to get going.

Is a DV server reliable?
DV servers are private, isolated environments. You can rest assured that your server and your data will not be affected by other users' code or programs. While a Dedicated Virtual server is not a stand-alone physical server, it's as reliable as if it was.
